Susan Phua - Immediate Past President

Past President

I am currently the Past President of the NZHBECEA having held the President’s role from 2017 to 2020.

This was a period in which I felt it was a huge privilege to be involved in the Home-Based Review process with the Ministry of Education and the review implementation process. During this time, the Board were able to build key relationships within the Ministry of Education and with key stakeholders. It was also a time when the Board implemented a clear strategic plan for the association to provide a clear direction forward.

I am currently the owner and founding Director of Wild Things Ltd which provides Home Based early learning service in Otago and Southland. Wild Things has been providing education and care services to families for over 20 years.

I have been involved in home based early childhood education and involved with the NZHECEA since 1996. I believe that the association has a vital role to play in representing Home–based early childhood education and care sector in New Zealand through advocacy, education, and collaboration.

My key areas of experience are in governance and management, leadership, and adult education. I have been involved in the NZHBECEA conference organisation as well as professional development opportunities for the wider early learning sector for over 10 years.   I am passionate about educator training, and ongoing professional development.

My love of early learning education came from my own parenting journey. I am qualified with a Diploma of Teaching Early Childhood Education 1996.

I am the mother of two grown sons who now have their own families and I am blessed to be the proud grandmother of three grandchildren. I am passionate about ensuring that early learning experiences for young children are to enable all children to flourish.

He taonga te mokopuna, kia whāngaia, kia tipu, kia rea.

A child is a treasure, to be nurtured, to grow, to flourish.
