The kaupapa for our conference is Stories of Connection – Who am I in this place?

We know that children learn best when they learn at their own pace in relationship with people, places, things and time. “Te Whāriki places the child in the centre of the curriculum – as the learner engaged with the learning environment, surrounded by various levels of learning: home, family, and the service; the adult environment and networks; and the nation’s beliefs and values about children and their learning and development.” (Lee, Carr, Soutar and Mitchell; Understanding the Te Whaariki Approach.)

To enable us to support the child as a learner we need to understand their story, who they are, their place within their whanau, past, present and future, their story of their language, culture and identity. With these funds of knowledge we can support them in their sense of belonging in our homebased ece settings, and in their wider community and world. We can weave the child’s story to connect with our own stories, connecting our values, perspectives, cultures and languages. From this place of belonging children can flourish and grow as competent and confident learners.

Come and join with us as we hear and tell the stories of diversity, perspective, culture, nature and belonging. We aim to provide provocations that inspire you to connect your own story of identity with those of the children in your care and inspire you to weave these into the fabric of your own local curriculum.
